1.5.3. Replacement of a wheel

Prevention

If at you lowered a wheel, move down after the journey on safe distance. Kill the engine, include headlights of the alarm system and establish other warning signs for the prevention of other drivers.

At a car raising by means of a jack passengers have to go out of the car.

Check that passengers expected at safe distance from the car and traffic.

Before replacement of a wheel, check that the earth was equal and firm. If it is necessary, put a board under a jack.

The car is not insured from the movement when one wheel does not concern the earth if you just include parking transfer on the automatic transmission or include any transfer on the mechanical transmission. To guarantee that the car will not start moving unexpectedly and will not slide off a jack, always install the car on the emergency brake and block diagonalno the located car wheels when replacing a wheel.

Step 1

Get a jack, tools and a spare wheel from a luggage carrier.

Step 2

Remove a decorative cap (if it is established) wheel naves by means of the screw-driver (establish a flat edge of the screw-driver for edge of a cap and wring out it) or take off a big decorative cap (if it is established), having implanted fingers into openings of a cap and having removed it.

Step 3

Turn off all bolts of fastening of a wheel counterclockwise on one turn by means of a face wrench. Do not remove bolts yet.

Step 4

On the bottom, on each party of the car is on two reference points which are located slightly below than rectangular points on a car body.

These deepenings are located approximately in 10 cm from forward and back wings.


On the Audi-Kupe and Quattro models these deepenings are located approximately in 12 cm from a forward wing and approximately in 6 cm from back.
Prevention

Prevention

Do not lift the car until you are sure that the jack is reliably established.

Step 6

Only for cars with disks of wheels of the Speed Line series:

Step 7

Turn off a bolt of fastening of a wheel, the next to top, by means of the handle of the screw-driver and put it on a pure surface (for example, a paper towel).

Twirl a plastic pin on its place.

Then completely turn off other bolts of fastening of a wheel and remove a wheel, having left a plastic pin in an opening for a bolt.

Before installation of a new wheel, clean off the dirt or traces of corrosion which are available on the adjoining surfaces of a wheel or a nave.

Establish a new wheel and press it to a nave. The plastic pin guarantees that openings in a wheel will coincide with carving openings in a wheel nave.

Establish bolts of fastening of a wheel by means of the screw-driver handle. Then unscrew a plastic pin and insert the remaining fixing bolt.

Tighten a few all bolts by means of a face wrench.

Bolts of fastening of a wheel have to be pure and it is easy to rotate - never grease them.

Prevention

The handle of the screw-driver should not be used for an inhaling of bolts of fastening of a wheel.

To lower the car, rotate the handle counterclockwise so far, the jack completely not to fall.

Step 8

Then, diagonalno, reliably tighten all bolts by means of a face wrench.

It is very important to twirl fixing bolts till the required inhaling moment.

Bolts are twirled correctly if their moment of an inhaling is equal to 110 N. to m. Any person of average force can twirl them till such moment of an inhaling. If you doubt that you twirled bolts till the required inhaling moment, check it by means of a dynamometer key.

If you notice that bolts of fastening rusted and badly twist, replace them.

Until you replace bolts, go carefully.

Step 9

Completely lower the car on the earth and remove a jack.

Check pressure in the tire of just established wheel.

Reliably fix the damaged wheel, a jack and tools in a luggage carrier.

Prevention

Do not postpone repair or replacement of the lowered wheel for long term.

Do not forget that the small-sized spare wheel is intended only for temporary use!
